Which Type of Headache is Causing Your Pain?

When you have a headache, you may not realize what type of a headache it is; you just know that it hurts and you want it to stop. It actually is important to know which type of a headache you are experiencing to help treat it correctly and ease your pain. Here are some types of headaches and their causes:

  • Migraine Headaches – The most painful of all types of headaches, migraines produce severe pain that is often accompanied by nausea and sometimes even sensitivity to noise and light. Migraines occur due to the constriction and dilation of blood vessels in the brain. The rapid increase in blood pressure that occurs during this constriction and dilation is what causes the severe pain from migraines.
  • Tension Headaches – Tension headaches are probably the most common type. Tension headaches are usually triggered by poor posture or trauma, such as that from a car accident. Poor posture causes headaches when stress is put on the spine and muscles surrounding the upper back and neck area. The cause of the pain is due to the back vertebra losing correct positioning, which causes muscle spasms.
  • Cluster Headaches – Another common type of a headache is a cluster headache. These are the headaches you can feel directly behind your eyes. Cluster headaches usually happen at night and are like migraines, just a bit less intense. They are called cluster headaches because they usually occur from one to four times a day for several days in a row – in clusters.

Chiropractic treatment has been proven as an effective way for treating migraines and headaches. Our Houston, TX chiropractor can offer relief to those who suffer from these types of headaches.
