Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem in today’s world. Many work tasks require repetitive actions that can lead to the injury of the delicate structures within the wrist and hand. Individuals may begin to feel numbness in the fingers or a feeling of electrical shock in the thumb or fingers. You may also experience a noticeable weakness in your hands. Some people may have pain that radiates up into the shoulder. Chiropractic techniques can help to relieve the discomfort from carpal tunnel problems, so you can work and play more effectively.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to a number of problems that have an impact on your everyday life. You may find that you drop objects frequently because the pinching muscles are affected. You may knock objects over frequently because of the numbness in your fingers. The feelings of shock may prevent you from performing actions for work tasks or for recreational activities. If left untreated, carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to permanent muscle and nerve damage.
The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome resulting from impingement of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, the passageway that runs from the wrist to the hand. When this passageway becomes narrowed, it begins to press on or irritate the nerve, leading to the characteristic symptoms. Damage to the carpal tunnel can occur from injury to the wrist, such as in athletic activities or auto accidents, or it can occur from metabolic problems, such as diabetes or obesity.
Physicians often recommend steroid injections to reduce inflammation in the wrist structures. Surgery is sometimes advised. However, if you prefer a drug-free, non-invasive method of treating carpal tunnel syndrome, chiropractic techniques offer another option. Manual adjustment of the spine can aid function in the shoulders and arms. Massage can improve circulation to affected areas. Taping or bracing the wrists can also help to reduce symptoms.
